A final thank you to our users and subscribers

If you’ve visited Vanno.com recently, you know that the subscriber site is no longer accessible.   Our parent company, Identity Commerce LLC, has decided to no longer offer subscriptions to the Vanno Company Reputation Index to the general public.    Identity Commerce LLC will continue to offer consulting services and access to the Vanno database to clients on an engagement basis.  If we can be of assistance in this regard, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We’ve learned a great deal over the last three years about tracking company reputations and quantifying what online crowds (and mobs) are saying about how companies treat their customers, employees, communities, the environment and society in general.   We sincerely hope the result – the Vanno Company Reputation Index – was of benefit to our users and subscribers both personally and professionally.

Vanno is changing!

Identity Commerce LLC is re-launching Vanno as a subscription-only service.  The new site is scheduled to open on February 1, 2010.   The existing free site is no longer accessible.  All user personal information from the free site has been permanently deleted in accordance with our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

We thank you for your continued interest in Vanno.  We invite you to visit the new site after February 1, 2010 and sign up for a free trial subscription.   We believe you will find it more compelling and professionally valuable than ever before.  If you have any questions, please contact us at question@vanno.com.

We apologize for the delay in launching the new site, but we’ve been a bit distracted by the addition of a new member to the Vanno family.    Shaila David Clark was born on January 17, 2010.  She immediately moved to the top of our rankings.

Company Intelligence powered by the Vanno Community

Remember that old Paul Simon song that goes something like:  …”When numbers get serious, you see their shape everywhere… “   We couldn’t find a better explanation anywhere of what Vanno is about.    Recall, for example, the online chatter about Kellogg, peanut butter, bongs and Pop-Tarts on the Web and in the blogosphere?   But it took numbers - ranks dropping from 9 to 16 to 32… – on a graph to crystallize what was going on in the minds of consumers and the media.    That now famous graph got a lot of heat for it’s cartoon-like form, but it’s substance was clear and effective.

Well, we’ve been working on our graphics skills, collecting and processing stories, votes and comments from our community and are now ready to make all our trending data available to the general public.   We call it Vanno Company Intelligence.    It includes amazing features like real-time reputation trend graphs for each of the 6000+ companies in our database, with interactive links to all the underlying stories, the ability to see the different aspects of reputation contribute to overall reputation and a tool to compare trends for multiple companies.   Check out the details here.

We’re offering Vanno Company Intelligence on a subscription basis.   The cost?    Well, if you are an active Elite Influencer in the Vanno community, you’ve already earned your subscription.   After all, without our community, we’d have no scores, no ranks and no trends.    But if you don’t have the time or inclination to participate in the community, we’re offering the service on a “pay what you think it’s worth” basis.     Seriously.    It’s not a gimmick, but an approach that’s based on an economic theory called “participative pricing” that is being used in online music (think Radiohead), restaurants and theaters.    And we think it’s particularly applicable in our case, partly because we’re new kids on the block, and partly because the value of insights gleaned from social news and social media is clearly different for different people.    So we’ll watch and learn, and in the meantime you can be sure you’re getting your money’s worth, because you’re setting the price.

And to be very clear - registered users will continue to have free access to the entire Company Reputation Index, best and worst company reputation lists, membership in the Vanno community, the ability to follow specific companies and users, ReputationCheck widgets and email alerts.

So we invite you to have a look.  Let us know what you like and don’t like, and what we can do better.

Check out ReputationCheck

We have another nice feature to announce this week:  We’ve released our ReputationCheck tools for bloggers and websites.   You can see one of these widgets in action right here on our blog sidebar - just put in a company name, pick an aspect of reputation, and you get a real-time snapshot of the company’s rank, along with the top 5 and bottom 5 comparables.   Another version of ReputationCheck lets you embed a real time company snapshot anywhere in your blog itself.    You can read more about ReputationCheck in our press release, and in the coverage we’ve gotten from CNBC, TechCrunch and BNET

If you’re chomping at the bit to put ReputationCheck up on your site or blog, just go here for simple instructions and the code you need.   If you do decide to give your users this cool new toy to play with, let us know and we’ll put you in our list of honored ReputationCheck partners that we’ll be announcing soon.

Make your profile a little more personal

In response to popular demand, we’ve added a feature that let’s you share a little more about yourself on your Vanno profile. Just click on the new  “Change Bio” link on the left side of your profile page, and you’ll see places to put in your name, your homepage or blog, and your location. There’s also a free-form Bio box, where you can tell others as much or as little about yourself as you want.

So, if you’ve wanted to tell the Vanno community more about yourself, and to know more about the people whose stories and comments you read, this feature’s for you!

Our new look

Since our launch we’ve received a lot of great feedback from our users.  Today we launched a new homepage that incorporates some important updates:

Meet our Users – We have a fantastic community.  We will be featuring some of them throughout the week.

Vanno Tour – First time visiting Vanno?  Check out our new tour

What others are Saying – Check out what journalists and bloggers are saying about us.

We hope you like the changes.  Drop us a note at info@vanno.com and tell us what you think!

Making Vanno more personal

I built my first web app in 1996 (in ASP) and moved to San Francisco shortly after that.  This means that I got to see the dot com boom start and end.  If I had to pick one word from that era that drove me the most nuts, I would pick: “personalization”.  I have nothing against personalization per se, but the word was always something that product managers wanted, but didn’t know why or how it should work.

We want every user to feel like Vanno is their “personalized” guide to stories that impact company reputations. The old profile page was our first step at making this work, but with today’s new release we have stepped it up a notch. Continue reading ‘Making Vanno more personal’

New content sharing features

Now that we’re open to the public, we want to make everyone aware of ways to share content with non-Vanno users and other sites.   Our Share Button, FriendFeed and Twitter connections and expanded RSS are just the first steps at integrating into the wider Web community, so stay tuned for more. Vanno is open to the public!

Today, November 13th, 2008, we’re opening Vanno to the general public.     We think it’s particularly apropos to do so at the present time, given the obvious need for more broad insight into, and scrutiny of, the many companies that affect our lives. Continue reading ‘Vanno is open to the public!’
