Does AIG have the worst reputation in the world?

The short answer, according to Vanno users, is not yet.    But the company could be well on its way, given the recent flood of outrage over their redistribution of bailout money to foreign banks and a number of their own executives.

If AIG doesn’t have the worst reputation, then who does?   We don’t know about the entire world, but from the 5800 companies that Vanno users have reported on, here are the overall rankings for some of the more notable bottom-dwellers, along with their reputation trends over the last six months.

First off, we can see the marked downward trend in AIG’s overall reputation, with a big drop that corresponds to its second bailout tranche in Nov. ‘08 (the first being in Sept. 2008).   But have a look at one of the first big banks that mortgage derivatives did in - IndyMac.  Its reputation was bad from the earliest days of the bailout, and got worse as it – and then other connected banks – collapsed.     Both are plumbing the depths occupied by the likes of HalliburtonAmerican Airlines and Chrysler.

Here we put AIG in the ring with a couple of companies at the center of deadly consumer scares involving salmonella in peanut butter in the US and melamine in milk in China.  AIG has a way to go to catch up (or down) with Peanut Corp. and Sanlu Group.

And being audio aficionados, we can’t help but compare AIG to a couple of companies in that business.  Monster Cable has a well-known penchant for taking legal action against anyone who would dare use the word “monster”, and Circuit City is another consumer complaint favorite whose well-publicized death rattle is just fading.

And last – and in social media circles certainly not least – we see that both Yelp and Facebook are held in lower regard by our users than AIG.    Knowing the howls of protest this would elicit, we checked the stories, votes and comments that went into their reputation scores.   We think the rankings reflect some serious concerns on the part of thoughtful users, but we invite you to have a look for yourself and add your opinion (in a civil manner, of course).
