This Week’s User Spotlight- The Holiday Edition

Happy Holidays Vanno-ers!  Christmas bells are ringing, Hannukah candles are burning (latkes are sizzling) and everywhere people are a little bit nicer.  As we gear up for the new year, we here at Vanno would like to wish Holiday Greetings and cheer to all of you.  We’ve got a lot to be thankful for this season- a great launch, a base of incredible users and (of course) the only place on the web where opinions about company reputations are captured as meaningful information.  Something great is happening here folks and we want to say thank you for being a part of it (>_<)

This week, our very own kjripp stumbled upon a great post by Dan Schwabel of Mashable, Top 10 Free Tools for Monitering Your Brand’s Reputation.  She mentioned the great work that you all have been doing here at Vanno, so kudos to Kerri for spreading the word.  It’s users like you find great material and share unique opinions that make Vanno such an interesting forum.  For those of you who haven’t checked out The Caffeinated Blog, here’s what you’re missing.

Lots of heat on the bailouts this week.  The Detroit three have our users gabbing and fuming, and this week’s report that “Bailed-Out Banks Can’t Track Where They’re Spending the Money” got a well deserved f-bomb from mavennyc821.  Though we try to remain as neutral as possible [for these posts at least (-_-)], it’s moments like these that have inspired us to construct a mechanism to collect these opinions.  Our goal is to capture and give permanance to people’s opinions…after all, what is society if not a group of individual opinions.

So that’s it for this week’s user spotlight.  Join us next week as we anxiously await our next Elite Influencer(s) to join our Fleet.  Until then, Happy New Year and best to you and your loved ones this Holiday Season.

The auto bailout – behind the music

The theme music for GM, Chrysler and Ford seems to be pretty much a death march, if you follow the headlines.   Surprisingly (to me, at least) much of the blogosphere blames this rapid downward spiral completely on American manufacturers making cars that people don’t want to buy, and not investing enough in making better, more fuel efficient lines.   A look at their Vanno reputation scores, and the stories our users have submitted, reveals a more nuanced – and hopeful - view.

This Week’s User Spotlight- Week of Dec. 14

The holidays are upon us- people running over each other for last minute gifts and working overtime to get those last few things done before the end of the year.  Since we’re concerned with company reputations here at Vanno, it’s worth noting this week’s holiday post about Fannie Mae (Sarah Palin’s favorite).

Fannie Mae improved its reputation for Social Responsibility, Management, and Quality by letting renters whose homes had foreclosed stay in them until after Christmas.  It’s certainly a nice gesture, one that old Ebeneezer wouldn’t have made for sure, but I’m not convinced it’s wise corporate governance.  Let me know what you think.  Thanks to nicemarmot for this one!

One that left me speechless (which you can tell by my comment threads is difficult to do) was the post about National Lampoons CEO posted by johnm.  I found myself a little dissapointed in him and then shaking my head at my own naivete.  Why should I expect more from the guys who brought us the shenanegans of the Griswolds absurd vacations?  I mean, Bluto chugging JD is on the wall of every college dorm in America, so why should we expect the CEO to be a model citizen?

Another interesting find was about Australian courts that use Facebook to collect debts.  It’s like RepoMan 2.0.  There’s been a lot of controversy over the Auto Bailout, which has gained heat and tension as Toyota has become involved and Northern auto workers are starting to point fingers at conservative politicians.  To read more about that, see nickd’s post below.

We’re seeing a lot of activity from our Novice users and great comment threads spring up around some of these hot topics.  One suggestion to our newbees- get your avatars up and personalize your profile.  I love seeing new faces on the popular page, so get yours up there and show your style.  We didn’t have any new additions to the Elite Fleet this week, so it’s something to work toward when you’re home chomping on turkey and swimming in gravy.

Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones.

This Week’s User Spotlight

Welcome back to our User Spotlight,

Lots going on behind the curtain here- sparks are flying and I think I heard a chainsaw earlier this morning.  Let’s just say we’re working hard to build the best place to research company reputations (and our opinions about those reps) online and loving the process.

We had one new addition to our Elite Fleet of Company Influencers this week.  Congratulations to denny for making it to the big leagues.  Plus, he’s got The Thinker as his avatar- fitting for such an important influencer.  Other cool people to check out: seth-infojunkie.  Seth found Vanno during his personal quest to find a way to build reputations for individuals.  That was a week ago.  Since then, he’s written about us on his blog, engaged nickd with some interesting ideas for our site and moved from Novice to Experienced.  Be sure to keep him on your radar.

My favorite story this week was- without a doubt- the one about Mr. Ellie Pooh.  This company makes journals, stationary and office supplies from recycled elephant poop.  (>_<) Yes, yes you heard me correctly they make journals out of poop.  As a lover of words and books, I find this concept abhorrent and slightly heretical, but I can’t help but laugh at the idea.  Ellie the Pooh, Ellie the Pooh…Don’t act like you don’t know the tune.  Thanks to nicemarmot for that one.

Remember, Vanno’s more fun when you follow so be sure check out the social features of our site.  I’ve made a few suggestions on people to follow- if you have your own, add their username to the comments section.

So that’s it for this week.  Tune in next week for more updates from the Vanno Team.

Eco-Electronics: Consumers want to know more about company environmental reputations

In the Green Inc. section of the New York Times today, Joe Hutsko writes that Consumers Want, and Are Skeptical About, Eco-Electronics.     His article cites a Consumer Electronics Assocation (CEA) study that found less than half of those surveyed able to make sense of the environmental attributes attached to electronics on the market.    “One of the greatest challenges certainly is consumer confusion about what ‘green’ means,” said Parker Brugge, the C.E.A.’s vice president of environmental affairs.

This Week’s User Spotlight

Hey Vanno-ers,

Today starts our newest community initiative- weekly user updates!  We want to give the spotlight to users who make us laugh, provoke great discussions or blow us away with their enthusiasm.

This week we’ve seen johnm, emilyfields, ruby1, and mavennyc821 make it to elite.  Cheers to emilyfields who won the S2 challenge, leaving jimschaff and jtoeman quivering in her flurry of votes and comments.  Congratulations you guys!  Making Elite is quite a feat (sorry for the dork out moment…I couldn’t resist) and it’s been great fun reading all the banter around your submissions.

My favorites this week included shaunsayers story, “They’re not reindeer – they’re dogs with twigs glued to their heads!”  Lapland New Forest’s Christmas village was compared to Chernobyl, where Santa was smacked and one of the elves was punched in the face.  Don’t miss it- I actually laughed out loud as I started digging around the source site.

Another one worth mentioning was landon’s “Former Hilton employee sues after witnessing executive orgy,”  a scandal which mavennyc821 said was “part of the brand at this point.”  Story goes- lady walks into ballroom where the execs are getting down, screams and goes to leave.  Boss man yells, “I’m gonna fire you” which he does.  Then she sues.  If you want to real version, check it out.

A special shout out to derm who moved from Novice to Experienced in 3 days with 17 votes and 2 story submissions.  Keep it up derm!

Popular Stories this week were submitted by landon, nickd, denny, nicemarmot, mavennyc821, jtoeman, shaunsayers, Ruby1, FlyFisherGirl, pinkuff, kjripp, tridesue, RoyC, mulgi, johnm, jjbpro, smarkovich, mak0shark, jimschaff, glee, merikilpikonna, seth-infojunkie and emilyfields.  Whew…that’s a list!

So that’s it for this week.  Tune in next week for more updates from the Vanno Team.
